Principal units of a complete ultrametric field as a topological Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-module

local-fieldsp-adictopological-groupsunits

Let KKK be a complete field with a non-archimedean absolute value in which ∥p∥<1\|p\| < 1∥p∥<1 for a prime ppp, for instance a finite extension of Qp\mathbb{Q}_pQp or the completion of a number field at a prime above ppp. The principal units (or 111-units) of KKK are

U1(K)  =  { u∈K×:∥u−1∥<1 },U_1(K) \;=\; \{\,u \in K^\times : \|u - 1\| < 1\,\},U1(K)={u∈K×:∥u−1∥<1},

a subgroup of K×K^\timesK× (oneUnits K). They form a pro-ppp group: for a principal unit uuu one has upk→1u^{p^k} \to 1upk→1, with the explicit contraction estimate

∥unk−1∥  ≤  max⁡(c,∥n∥)k⋅cwhenever ∥u−1∥≤c≤1.\|u^{n^k} - 1\| \;\le\; \max(c, \|n\|)^k \cdot c \qquad\text{whenever } \|u - 1\| \le c \le 1 .∥unk−1∥≤max(c,∥n∥)k⋅cwhenever ∥u−1∥≤c≤1.

Consequently a principal unit xxx has ppp-adic powers: for a∈Zpa \in \mathbb{Z}_pa∈Zp and any integers an→aa_n \to aan→a the sequence xanx^{a_n}xan converges, and

xa  :=  lim⁡n→∞xanx^{a} \;:=\; \lim_{n \to \infty} x^{a_n}xa:=n→∞limxan

is independent of the approximating sequence (OneUnits.zpPow, defined with the standard approximations a.appr n). The exponent rules xa+b=xaxbx^{a+b} = x^a x^bxa+b=xaxb, xab=(xb)ax^{ab} = (x^b)^axab=(xb)a, (xy)a=xaya(xy)^a = x^a y^a(xy)a=xaya, xn=x(n)x^n = x^{(n)}xn=x(n) for n∈Zn \in \mathbb{Z}n∈Z hold, x↦xax \mapsto x^ax↦xa is 111-Lipschitz on U1(K)U_1(K)U1(K), and a↦xaa \mapsto x^aa↦xa is continuous. Read additively, this makes U1(K)U_1(K)U1(K) a topological Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-module (OneUnits.instModule, with ContinuousConstSMul ℤ_[p]), in which a⋅u=lim⁡n(an)⋅ua \cdot u = \lim_n (a_n) \cdot ua⋅u=limn(an)⋅u (OneUnits.tendsto_appr_nsmul, and OneUnits.tendsto_appr_nsmul_pi for a finite product of such groups). A closed subgroup of such a module is automatically a Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-submodule (AddSubgroup.smul_mem_of_isClosed).

This is the structure underlying every Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-rank statement about ppp-adic closures of unit groups: the semilocal units Up(F)=∏℘∣pO℘×U_p(\mathbb{F}) = \prod_{\wp \mid p} \mathcal{O}_\wp^\timesUp(F)=∏℘∣pO℘× of a number field contain the finite-index subgroup ∏℘∣pU1(F℘)\prod_{\wp \mid p} U_1(\mathbb{F}_\wp)∏℘∣pU1(F℘), which is a finitely generated Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-module, and continuous homomorphisms from Zp n\mathbb{Z}_p^{\,n}Zpn into it are automatically Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-linear. Together with Definitions.Def_PrimesOverNorm, which supplies the hypothesis ∥p∥<1\|p\| < 1∥p∥<1 at the primes above ppp, it is the input for the open frontier lemmas of Leopoldt's conjecture for CM fields.

Formalization Note The module structure is an instance on Additive (oneUnits K) under the hypotheses [NontriviallyNormedField K] [IsUltrametricDist K] [CompleteSpace K] [Fact (‖(p : K)‖ < 1)]. zpPow x a takes a junk value when ∥x−1∥≥1\|x - 1\| \ge 1∥x−1∥≥1. The file is taken verbatim, apart from the removal of the module-system header, from the Formal Conjectures project (Apache 2.0), by Chris Birkbeck; Mathlib has no such module structure at this revision.

# `p`-adic powers of principal units

Let `K` be a complete ultrametric field with `‖p‖ < 1`, for instance a finite extension of `ℚ_p`
or the completion of a number field at a prime above `p`. The principal units, or `1`-units,
`oneUnits K = {u : Kˣ | ‖u - 1‖ < 1}` form a pro-`p` group: `u ^ (p ^ k) → 1`
(`IsUltrametricDist.tendsto_pow_pow_sub_one`). Hence a principal unit `x` has `p`-adic powers
`x ^ a = lim x ^ aₙ` for `a ∈ ℤ_p` and integers `aₙ → a`, and `Additive (oneUnits K)` is a
topological `ℤ_[p]`-module.

* `oneUnits K`: the subgroup of `Kˣ` of principal units.
* `OneUnits.zpPow x a`: the `p`-adic power `x ^ a = lim x ^ (a.appr n)` of `x : K` by `a : ℤ_[p]`.
* `OneUnits.instModule`: the `ℤ_[p]`-module structure `a • u = u ^ a` on `Additive (oneUnits K)`,
  with `ContinuousConstSMul ℤ_[p] (Additive (oneUnits K))`.
* `OneUnits.tendsto_appr_nsmul`, `OneUnits.tendsto_appr_nsmul_pi`: `a • u = lim (a.appr n) • u`.
* `AddSubgroup.smul_mem_of_isClosed`: closed subgroups are `ℤ_[p]`-submodules.

This file is taken verbatim (module-system header removed) from
`FormalConjecturesForMathlib/NumberTheory/Padics/OneUnits.lean` of the Formal Conjectures
project (Apache 2.0), by Chris Birkbeck.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
