Dropping the vanishing i=0i = 0i=0 term: ∑i=0Ni−1=∑i=1Ni−1\sum_{i=0}^{N} i^{-1} = \sum_{i=1}^{N} i^{-1}∑i=0Ni−1=∑i=1Ni−1

For every natural number NNN,

∑i=0N1i  =  ∑i=1N1i,\sum_{i = 0}^{N} \frac{1}{i} \;=\; \sum_{i = 1}^{N} \frac{1}{i},i=0∑Ni1=i=1∑Ni1,

where the sums are over the integer intervals {0,…,N}\{0, \dots, N\}{0,…,N} and {1,…,N}\{1, \dots, N\}{1,…,N} respectively, and the i=0i = 0i=0 term is 000 by the convention 0−1=00^{-1} = 00−1=0 for real division in Lean.

This is the auxiliary re-indexing step behind the identification of ∑i∈[0,N]i−1\sum_{i \in [0,N]} i^{-1}∑i∈[0,N]i−1 with the harmonic number HNH_NHN: it isolates exactly the observation that the boundary term at i=0i = 0i=0 vanishes, so interval sums starting at 000 or at 111 agree.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
