Let f:C→Cf : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}f:C→C, let p∈Cp \in \mathbb{C}p∈C, and let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C}U⊆C be a neighborhood of ppp. Assume: (i) fff is nonvanishing on U∖{p}U \setminus \{p\}U∖{p}; (ii) fff is holomorphic on U∖{p}U \setminus \{p\}U∖{p}; and (iii) there is a nonzero constant A∈CA \in \mathbb{C}A∈C such that the difference f(s)−As−pf(s) - \dfrac{A}{s - p}f(s)−s−pA is bounded on U∖{p}U \setminus \{p\}U∖{p} — i.e. fff has a simple pole at ppp with residue A≠0A \neq 0A=0, up to a bounded error. Then the logarithmic derivative of fff satisfies

f′(s)f(s)+1s−p  =  O(1)as s→p, s≠p,\frac{f'(s)}{f(s)} + \frac{1}{s - p} \;=\; O(1) \qquad \text{as } s \to p,\ s \neq p,f(s)f′(s)+s−p1=O(1)as s→p, s=p,

where the asymptotic is with respect to the punctured neighborhood filter at ppp.

In words: a function behaving like A/(s−p)A/(s-p)A/(s−p) near ppp has logarithmic derivative behaving like −1/(s−p)-1/(s-p)−1/(s−p), with a bounded correction. This is the abstract residue computation applied in the Prime Number Theorem to f=ζf = \zetaf=ζ at p=1p = 1p=1: it yields −ζ′/ζ(s)=1s−1+O(1)-\zeta'/\zeta(s) = \frac{1}{s-1} + O(1)−ζ′/ζ(s)=s−11+O(1) near the pole, which is the source of the main term xxx in the asymptotic for ψ(x)\psi(x)ψ(x). Stated for a general fff, it is reusable for any meromorphic function with a simple pole or zero.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
