For every real number aaa, the larger of aaa and −a-a−a equals the absolute value ∣a∣|a|∣a∣. In the max-plus (tropical) semiring this is the statement that the tropical sum of a literal and its additive inverse recovers the tropical norm. It is the one-site identity behind exact degree-one elimination of an Ising spin: maximizing s(h+Jsu)s(h+J s_u)s(h+Jsu) over s∈{±1}s\in\{\pm 1\}s∈{±1} yields ∣h+Jsu∣|h+J s_u|∣h+Jsu∣.

max⁡(a,−a)=∣a∣.\max(a,-a)=|a|.max(a,−a)=∣a∣.

This lemma is the first certified building block of DeciTN's exact residual reductions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
